Canada has broken our hearts a lot lately.

First, the USA women’s hockey team can’t hold off a furious rally from the Canadian women, and a lost golden chance for Olympic Gold in Sochi.

Then, the USA men’s hockey team, composed of all those NHL stars, were denied even getting to the gold medal round by the Canadians. And the lonely goal scored by Canada was delivered by Canadian Jamie Benn, who plays for the Dallas Stars no less.

But heads can be held high again after the American/ Texas Six Man All-Stars defeated the Canadian Six Man All-Stars 54-16 in the Can-Am Bowl July 5th in Hague, Saskatchewan.

And while the 12 Texans on the team swarmed the Canadians on both sides of ball, two Wyoming All-Stars were named MVPs on offense and defense. Seth Bennett was named MVP on defense and Cory Baker was named MVP on offense – he scored every TD for the US of A.

Colby Boozer of Dallas Covenant was named MVP of special teams.

Jesse Arredondo from Cherokee was also cited for his play on defense, and Austin Castillo from

Wilson was cited by the coaching staff for coming off the bench and “being everywhere on every play.”

“Our guys came out hitting hard from the get-go, swarming on defense, and never letting up, “said Bear Chesley, head coach of the American Six Man All-Stars and Head Coach of Wilson High, near Lubbock.

And the Canadians had a real advantage: the playbook from the Texans, courtesy of Coach Chesley.

He gave it to the Canadian coaches after the American Six Man All-Stars won the bowl last year 64-14.

Now, that’s sportsmanship.

The Canadians are still adding finesse and nuances to their game and we’re glad to help them,” says coach Chesley. “Plus we’ll never play’em in district or the playoffs, “ he added with a grin rising above his seven-day road trip beard.

The Canadian team treated their American foes to a fireworks show on the Fourth of July and the teams shared dinner that evening.

Now, that’s sportsmanship.

“The boys made friends that would never make otherwise and they’re playing for their country, “ says Coach Chesley. "To raise the Stars and Stripes and the Can-Am Cup, it brings tears to your eyes.”

And it makes every American and everybody in Texas Six Man feels a little better now about playing the Canadians in anything.
